Chester is a real sweetie who is about four years old. He arrived well behaved but very scared to no longer be with the woman who rescued him from the pole he was tied to outside in December. She’d have kept him but she has two other rescues and only can keep two dogs. He is busy settling in, and has been eating regularly and going for nice long walks (he walks nicely on a leash but when he is scared he doesn’t know where to go). He will be groomed this weekend, and have his teeth cleaned and will get neutered on Monday (thanks to Dr. Fried in Riverdale, NY, who has been a big help!).He did very well being bathed in the kitchen sink and ran all around - happy as can be afterward!
Chester is nervous but is getting used to the sounds of a NYC apartment that has one other dog and two birds. He doesn’t bark much and is very sweet, likes to be petted, and will roll over so you can scratch his belly. He “sits” and “lays down.” He is afraid of rolled up papers and doors opening and shutting (it scares him terribly). He likes to look in your eyes, smell you, and give kisses. He posed nicely for his pictures and likes to sit either on the floor or the bed. He loves Mother Hubbard dog biscuits! And he is enjoying his CET chews, which will help to keep his teeth clean.
Chester has been using the wee-wee pads. Now he goes inside less and less, as he learns that his walks outside are when he is supposed to do his business. Getting neutered will help, too. He did not like the crate the first night, and has since had the bedroom to call his own, which he enjoys quite a lot! He sits on the bed watching the squirrels and cars go by, and he does not whine when foster-mom leaves to go to work. Chester is a good boy.
Chester gets along very well with other dogs, but has not seen a cat yet since he’s been with his foster mom. He listens and comes when called, and is generally a very well behaved dog. He would do well in a house where the new owner(s )can be patient with his fear of anything new, and who can reassure him that he is safe. He will be an easy dog to care for and will gives many years of enjoyment.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
