About Samantha

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
Sammie has been adopted! LOVE REALLY DOES HEAL!This is Samantha's story. Unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident. Samantha is a beautiful 3yr old yorkie girl. Thanks to an unscrupulous backyard breeder, she has lived her whole life in a small cage having litter after litter of puppies. She never knew what it was to run in the grass or play with a toy. Medical care, if any, was scarce. Samantha and three others were surrendered to rescue after a friend of the breeder convinced her to give them to us rather than put them to sleep since she was finished breeding them and had no more use for them. The other three have been adopted and are now in happy and wonderful homes. Samantha, however, has mammary cancer. She has had three of her breasts removed already and is facing a radical mastectomy on the right side next week followed by one on the left side in a month. This is a little girl who has never had a chance. Just when she should be looking forward to at least ten years of being treated like a princess, this happens. If ever there was an argument for responsible breeding and early spay and neuter, this is it. PLEASE spay and neuter your pets. PLEASE only buy from responsible and qualified breeders that truly care for their dogs. PLEASE HELP US GIVE SAMMIE A CHANCE TO LIVE!!!!!! The vet says that following surgery, if Samantha can stay cancer free for two years, then she should do well. Are you going to click past this page as you search for only a young and completely healthy dog? This is a chance to make a critical difference for a sweet and gentle little girl who certainly deserves better. We will not know for at least two months whether or not Samantha will be adoptable, but without your help, she has no chance at all.May 31st. At this time we are feeling more encouraged for Sammie. She has had one radical mastectomy and is healing well. She is scheduled for the second one on June 7th. Her eyes are brighter and she is beginning to run around and play some. As you can see from her most recent picture, she now looks like she wants to live. The vet is now saying that he feels she has a good chance to do well and live a normal lifespan. She will need close monitoring for the next two years, and that will be a condition of adoption. She will come with a treatment protocol from the vet that will have to be followed to make sure that any possible re-occurance is caught while it is still treatable. Her vet bills at this time are almost 2,000.00. We need your help to pay these bills so that Sammie and others can live. Please look closely at her picture when she first came into rescue and the picture taken on May 30th - you'll be able to tell between them. This is the difference that good nutrition, vet care and most of all love makes possible. This is the difference that YOU can make.Thank you,Samantha's foster mom

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
