You are looking for a small dog - young, but not a puppy.  You thought a Yorkie might be a good choice because they don't shed. You bought and read a book on them and realize that they are not good with children but since you don't have any small children, that is not an issue for you.

You also read that Yorkies are very small dogs with small bladders. If they are left alone for long periods of time - over 3 hours, they will have to go, regardless of where YOU are; so you know to prepare before you leave the house. You bought an exercise pen (we call them ex-pens) so that you have a safe place for your Yorkie to stay while you are out of the house (small bathrooms and laundry rooms can be very boring places for such social dogs). Since you will be with your Yorkie most of every day, you will be sure that she gets outside to potty and you intend to walk her EVERY day - weather permitting.

Since you are looking for a young Yorkie, you know that obedience training is vital and you have checked out different places to find one that you know will work with you to help you bond with your Yorkie. Good for you!  See how well you have prepared for your new arrival?

You have read those books, talked to other owners, even consulted your vet to ask if there are any special needs you should be aware of for Yorkies and by George, you found that their teeth are a weak spot and they will need a dental cleaning every year. It gets to be expensive, as your vet pointed out, so you have decided to self insure. You will be putting aside $40 every month to pay for vet bills, especially emergency situations, that will require such funds. Pet insurance IS a good idea but statistics show that often the insurance does not cover everything and that by putting away some money for the dog's vet bills, you will be prepared for whatever happens. Great. NOW we are ready to talk Yorkie.

Sweet Pea is a delightful, young, healthy female Yorkie girl.  Sweet Pea did NOT get along with a bigger dog, a Beagle. They had constant tifs and Sweet Pea lost the sight in one of her eyes due to the battles. So be prepared that she does not like other dogs. She's a real sweetie with people, rides well in the car, loves to be held and with you on your lap.

She is vacationing in Wilmington, DE with Jane.  If you have done all the preparation mentioned above, you are ready. We'll be asking questions about it all, so be prepared. Sweet Pea is never going to bounce back into rescue again.  She is all set to come home.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
