She was found huddled in the wrecked crate - or what remained of the crate - it was destroyed! Her trusted owner, an ancient woman whose mind had fled long ago, had attacked the dog, kicked the crate, terrorized the little girl until she bit to save herself. The door of the crate was completely ripped off its hinges and dog was found cowering in the back of it by relatives of the owner.

So what did the relatives do? Why take the dog to the vet of course - to be killed!

A perfectly beautiful, wonderful, healthy Yorkie girl - they didn't want her themselves so they told the vet to kill her? Pretty rough story for a small dog whose only home was a concentration camp of demented torture.  But it gets worse.

The 'saviours' of this little girl, called our rescue to take her, and like always, we were full again, out of space - no foster homes available. So we asked them to hold her until one of our dogs was adopted and we could take her in. Would they hold on to her for just a few days? Nope! Back to the vet they went to have her killed - AGAIN!  This time the vet called a wonderful lady from our rescue who, though she couldn't keep the dog herself, agreed to take her on an emergency basis. THANK GOD!

So the relatives put the dog back in the crate and brought her to rescue - IN THE TRUNK OF THEIR CAR!  Can you believe this?!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are horrified at their callousness. Shasta can thank God that she is out and away from such cold hearted lunatics.

Shasta is just 7 years old, has lovely long hair, is spayed and up to date on shots. She is starting to come out of her shell - giving kisses to everyone, bouncing up and down when people come to meet her, and she is exploring her new world. We are moving her to Marlton, NJ and we'll work on gaining her trust in humans again. So far she hasn't had any reason to love humans.

UPDATE: Shasta's foster mom writes:

Hello, all -

Shasta is in the house!  Shasta greeted me with kisses ... and we went for a walk before we got in the car for the ride back to NJ.

Shasta was a perfect lady on the drive home ... she sat quietly in her crate and watched the world go by.

We got home and I was a little nervous as we did not know her attitude with dogs.

So when we entered the house, Teddy was in the kitchen, behind a gate.  I walked Shasta into the house, with her leash on,and walked her to the other side of the gate.  Teddy greeted us ... they stood nose to nose for for a minute ...

then both went their own way.  Not a growl, not a bark ... nothing.

Shasta spent the next hour exploring the house.  After that,  I let her into the back yard ...

where she delighted in exploring for a long time.  She would stop and listen to the birds, other dogs barking, people talking ... wandering along the fence line ... exploring the flower beds ... just getting to know her new environment.

Teddy came out of the kitchen ... and they very peacefully co-existed ... no evidence of aggression at all.

Shasta is 12.5 pounds.  But she's not fat at all ... just a good sized yorkie.

She and Teddy have shared space for most of the afternoon and evening ... she tried to play with Teddy a few minutes ago,he wasn't interested .. so she just moved on.

She has let me pet her ... and brush her ... she easily jumps up onto the couch and the easy chair.

We haven't found any toys she likes, and she didn't bring any with her.

So far, she has loved going for a walk ... briskly exploring her new environment.

She ate her dinner with grace ... and licked her plate clean.

So far, she's been a model guest!

More to come!  We'll take new photos this weekend.

Give her a look, and if she speaks to your heart, put in your application. Shasta deserves the best.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
