"How much will it be to put him down?" asked the thin woman with a hurried look. It was clear that she wanted to get out of there badly, her mouth was drawn and her nose looked pinched, as if she smelled something offensive. The small dog was smiling up at the group gathered in the lobby. He was thrilled from the wonderful ride in the car with Aunt Gertrude and he was excited to meet all the other dogs in the waiting room. The office manager frowned. Business was business but this was obscene. That dear little dog was staring up at her with the sweetest of expressions. Kill him? For no reason? How could they even ask? No one had ever put her in this position in all the years she had worked for the vet. At that moment, God stepped in, in the shape of a young lady. "I know this dog," she said. "What is going on here?" The woman ignored her, paid the requested amount, then handed the leash to the office manager as she swept out the door without a word or a look back. The Office Manager explained that the woman was the daughter of the dog's owner, a 91 year old man who she just put in a nursing home several days ago. His cherished dog, the love of his life, had been left alone in the home for days with someone stopping by occasionally to give the dog food and water. People swear they heard the rustle of angel wings when the young lady asked for the leash. Scooby, an easy going friendly sort, thought he had just met a new friend. He was hungry and thirsty - no one had fed him that morning, and he was ready for his dinner. "My name's Peggy, sweetheart. You might not remember me but I remember YOU. I trimmed you up last summer when your daddy brought you in for a bath. I thought you were gorgeous then and I think you are beautiful now. Let's go home." She spoke with a softness and assurance that calmed his nervous eyes. Scooby capered right along with her - thinking - "Going for a car ride!" Peggy's heart was heavy - she wanted to help the darling little Yorkie but her husband wouldn't allow her to keep him. What could she do? As she drove home, she thought about his plight. He laid with his chin in her lap, adoring her with his soulful brown eyes. "I won't let anything bad happen to you Scooby." We'll get through this, together. Trust me. And so he did. When they got home, she brought Scooby in and seeing his interest in the empty bowls her dogs had left, she figured he was hungry. She was wrong. Scooby was STARVED. No one had fed him since yesterday and the water bowl had been empty all day yesterday. No one was home and the visitor hadn't checked his bowl. He had had to potty in the house twice, to his shame - he tried to wait but no one ever came to let him out. It had been a very lonely time for Scooby. The Angel Lady put down a bowl of very delicious food, warmed slightly in the microwave and smelling like heaven. She gave him a bowl brimming with clean cold water - which he drank immediately. After his dinner, he laid down at her feet while she worked on the computer - looking up names of shelters. Time after time she called, asking if they could take one small dog. Each one turned her down saying he was too old, they would just euthanize him and she would have to pay for it. She was very discouraged. Looking down at the sleeping dog, she whispered: 'You are a wonderful Yorkie!" That's when the light came on. He WAS a Yorkie and he needed help. He needed Yorkie Rescue. A few clicks of the mouse and she had a phone number. The rescue person answered her questions and directed her to call the President of the Rescue. The next call would tell the story: Could someone, would someone take an old dog in, when there was no where else to go? Or would they turn him away, as all of the shelters had? You know the end of the story.. or at least as far as it goes. Scooby came into rescue, thanks to the hard work, and kindness and caring of the rescuers. Calls were made, plans were set up, transports discussed, miles driven and a new life began for Scooby of Troy. Scooby is vacationing in Webster, NY near Buffalo - with Lin and Ron Egan. He's cuter than a bug and deserves better than most people are capable of giving. From now on - only the best for Scooby.
